Improved Scorching Bay to Officially Reopen
One of Wellington’s most popular beaches, Scorching Bay, will be officially reopened this Sunday 30 March following the completion of a five-month upgrade.
The $700,000 upgrade was made possible thanks to the Charles Plimmer Bequest which is administered by Wellington City Council.
The main focus of the upgrade was to redevelop and extend the seawall at the southern end of the beach. This will help prevent erosion - which has led to more than four metres of Scorching Bay's grass area being scoured away since it was constructed in the 1950s.
Other improvements include:
a gently sloping access ramp and concrete paths to help protect grass areas
a playground rope-climbing structure
native plantings under the pohutukawa trees, around buildings and the roadside
a paved outdoor shower area in front of the existing amenity building.
Scorching Bay beach will be officially reopened by Deputy Mayor Ian McKinnon at 11.00am on Sunday 30 March. The event will coincide with the conclusion of the Contact Energy Scorching Bay Triathlon.
