Michael Papps has been fined half of his match fee after being found guilty of breaching the New Zealand Cricket Code of Conduct during the State Championship game between Auckland Aces and Canterbury Wizards.

Auckland Association Commissioner Andrew Gilchrist penalised the Canterbury Wizards and BLACKCAPS batsman after he was reported by match umpires Dennis Smith and Phil Jones for an incident occurring on Monday (24 March).

The report alleged a breach of Rule 3(a), claiming that Papps, on being given out remained at the crease for what the umpires felt was an unacceptable amount of time and a clear sign of descent.

A hearing was convened on Monday evening, attended by the Association Commissioner, the match umpires, Papps and Canterbury coach David Nosworthy that evening.

Explaining his decision, Mr Gilchrist said: “In my judgment it would be unfair and harsh on Papps to be suspended for a four-day match for what must be considered a breach at the lowest end of the scale.

“Thus taking into account all possible mitigating factors, I do however believe that more than a written censure is required. I am of the view that the appropriate penalty is the loss of half of his match fee.”

Mr Gilchrist granted the player leave to appeal the decision to the National Commissioner within 48 hours of the written decision.
