DANNEVIRKE

With summer passing, the days shorter and the land still dry as a bone the Dannevirke CBD refurbishment has been making progress toward completion of the first third of the project. Underground stormwater work is mostly finished and the site is much tidier with most of the High St footpaths newly asphalted. The main activity now is to complete the corner kerb extensions and the decorative features such as footpath paver band inlays and erection of street furniture.

Sub contractors Creations Paving have the Town Hall corner to fully pave followed by final sanding and sealing of all the paved corner extensions. They will then erect street furniture and assist Infracon to construct the 200 plus decorative paver bands.

Business people in the affected areas have been very supportive and tolerant during the hot dry months of work. Council and Infracon are very grateful for this. The project aims to improve the appearance, safety and user-friendliness of the business district thereby attracting visitors and shoppers. Businesses are encouraged to ‘ride the refurbishment wave’ by also sprucing up their frontages if possible along with the major street work (see photo). This will add strength to the finished effect and the prospects for our shopping precinct.

The next section of work (section 3) will begin beside the old Post Office in Gordon St and extend around the corner along the footpath beside Copenhagen Square to the National Bank. Beyond this, section 4 continues south to the Work and Income building and around the corner into Ward St where a new ‘green space’ will be built. This will incorporate a feature area for the display and appreciation of outdoor art works or sculpture. Creative and imaginative contributions are welcomed and may be notified to the Dannevirke Community Board for consideration.
