Omarunui landfill disposal fees to increase

Fees at the Omarunui Landfill are set to increase from 1 July 2008.

The current charge rate of $44 per tonne (excluding GST) for general municipal waste at the
Omarunui Landfill will increase to $48 per tonne (excluding GST). This represents an increase of
9.1%.

Martin Jarvis, who oversees the running of the landfill for Hastings District Council, said the
charges at the landfill are set at the level required to retain full cost recovery of all expenses
associated with running the facility.

“Charge rates at the landfill last increased three years ago. Since then costs associated with
developing and operating the landfill have increased,” said Mr Jarvis.

The decreasing volume of waste entering the landfill has also had an impact on charge rates.
All waste categories at the landfill are affected by this increase. This includes ‘Special Wastes’
which increase from $66 per tonne (excluding GST) to $72 per tonne (excluding GST).
