Swim School coaches will next week review their standards in an effort to encourage every New Zealand to be able to learn to swim. Coaches and Teachers from the Quality Swim Schools, the industry benchmark for best practice standards in the swim teaching industry, will meet at the National Swim Coaches and Teachers (NZSCAT) Conference in Wellington next week.

“We want every New Zealander to be able to swim and to know that if the swim school carries the Quality Swim School brand, that swim school has met industry agreed standards,” said Ally Todd, Education Manager, Swimming New Zealand.

“Those standards include programming, staff training, management, facility and safety. In addition on-going auditing procedures ensure standards are maintained.” So far 81 swim schools have met Quality Swim School standards established by Swimming New Zealand earlier this year with many more progressing through the assessment process.

The Quality Swim Schools group aim to improve the image and services of learning to swim and swim schools in New Zealand. “The advantages are significant. They include higher standards of swimming tuition, recognised, accountable standards for good industry practice, improved professional status for swim coaches and teachers, validated safe learn to swim methods and standards that deliver and demonstrate best practice in Learn to Swim provision.

“Our customers will have peace of mind that their swim school conforms to a nationally recognised standard, providing them with excellent teaching practices in a safe environment. The result will be a quality experience that benefits everyone and helps to keep everyone swimming for longer.”

Mrs Todd said the Quality Swim School mark has been developed as the national mark for swim school best practice. Only those schools who comply can be awarded and can carry the Quality Swim School mark. Over the next year it will be actively promoted by Swimming New Zealand, Swim Coaches and Teachers of New Zealand Inc and the New Zealand Recreation Association, so that the public can instantly recognise the value this mark brings to a swim school.
