Either Mason or Gillespie will remain with the Test squad after May 1. The method for determining which player will remain will be determined in the next few days.
Selection panel manager Sir Richard Hadlee said: “These squads signal the future for the BLACKCAPS and there are a number of exciting selections.
“In particular, we welcome Aaron Redmond into the squad for the Test tour. Aaron has been one of the State Championship leading top-order batsmen for a number of seasons. He has consistently made runs from the opening position, averaging over 40 this year.
“We hope he can provide a long-term solution to the top order, which we recognise as still being a key issue.
“Daniel Flynn was capped earlier this season in ODIs and his excellent form throughout the New Zealand summer in State Shield and State Championship is rewarded with inclusion in both teams.
“James Marshall is recalled after another excellent season in the State competitions.
“The main Test squad will total 16 players to include a second wicket keeping option in Hopkins. Previously we had covered short term wicket keeping with batsman in the squad who can keep, but we do not have that luxury with this squad.
“Jamie How will captain the team before Daniel Vettori arrives. Jamie has many years of captaincy experience and recently led a New Zealand XI against England.
“Jesse has been selected for the ODI squad subject to fitness. Peter Fulton has been bracketed should Jesse not be able to join the squad.”
The BLACKCAPS play three Test matches against England before a Twenty20 match and a five-match ODI series with England.
They then travel to Scotland for a tri-series against the hosts and Ireland in Aberdeen.
