At last weeks Taupo Youth Council meeting the youth selected their Chairman and Deputy Chairman.

Chris Swney, a senior member of the Taupo Youth Council and last years Chair was voted back in as Chairman this year. Newcomer to the Youth Council, Anna-Rose Davies was voted in as Deputy Chairman.

The two Taupo Nui-a-Tia students were rapt to be selected to lead the Taupo Youth Council.

“We had a great year last year and want to continue and build on our success. We have some fresh faces and some innovative ideas which is really cool,” said Mr Swney.

Ms Davies was very honoured to be voted in as Deputy Chair her first year on the Council.

“I thought the team did a great job last year and am looking to being involved with some new projects this year,” she said.

One of the ideas discussed at last weeks meeting was a silent disco – a disco where dancers tune into the DJ via their iPods. This is being planned for late July to coincide with the school holidays.

“The silent disco was something that I experienced at Parachute 08 - I thought it was awesome and wanted to introduce a similar concept for Taupo youth,” said Mr Swney.

The Youth Council also confirmed details for an event on 30 May, being run in conjunction with National Youth Week which is being branded “Do it to it”.

Community Support Project Officer, Jenny Steadman who works closely with the Taupo Youth Council said “the focus of this year’s National Youth Week is the importance of relationships for young people.”

Taupo District Council’s Community Support Team has managed to secure funding for the event from Youthtown and the Youth Council has formed a working group to plan the event, working with the Youth Cafe. Popular National band Spacifix have been confirmed to play along with a number of local bands.
