The pools have now been filled at the new $18.1 million Queenstown Aquatic Centre, adding to the excitement as the project nears completion, Queenstown Aquatic Centre manager Cam Sheppard said.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council would officially hand over the pool to Lakes Leisure Limited on May 8.

“From that point we will be undertaking staff training before the pool opens on May 31 but we know there is a growing vibe and people are really keen to come and have a look,” Mr Sheppard said.

The council would therefore host a public open day from 10am to 12.30pm on Saturday, May 10 to enable the community to take a first peak inside the complex.

“People will have to resist the temptation to get in the water but there will be an opportunity for those who come along to the open day to register to be involved in training sessions in the weeks prior to the pool opening,” Mr Sheppard said.

Finalising the name of the facility would also involve the community, he said.

“We will be launching a naming competition next week,” Mr Sheppard said.
