Visitors to East Harbour Regional Park can get an even better look at its beautiful wetlands with the completion of a walking circuit around Lakes Kohangapiripiri and Kohangatera.

“The Lakes Circuit is unique and destined to become another memorable day walk in the park, like Butterfly Creek,” says Cr Rex Kirton, Chair of Greater Wellington’s Parks, Forests and Utilities Committee.

The lakes have a wealth of native birds and plants, and are an example of one of the few remaining healthy shallow coastal wetlands in New Zealand. Visitors can expect to enjoy sweeping aerial views as they walk along the ridges surrounding the wetlands, and get up-close as they descend into the valleys and walk along the boardwalks.

For many years walking in this area was limited to a return trip up one of the sides of the two lakes. The swamps of Lake Kohangapiripiri and Lake Kohangatera acted as physical barriers that prevented any round trips in the area. However, piled boardwalks, including the new 115 metre boardwalk across the Gollans Valley swamp, now allow visitors to fully experience the stunning wetland and maritime environment.

“The tracks and boardwalks have been designed to have minimal environmental impact. You can even ride your mountainbike along them – just make sure you keep to the tracks,” says Cr Kirton.
