Tourism Minister Damien O'Connor today visited Lincoln University to hear first-hand research on tourism's impact on climate change in New Zealand.

Mr O'Connor spoke to tourism students, lecturers and researchers. Among the topics covered was the tourism strategy update, the university's current study on yield, and research on tourism's impact on climate change.

He said good research was vital to the future of tourism, so that the industry can gain a clear picture of exactly why New Zealand has done so well in the past, and to make sure we continue the success in the future.

Climate expert Dr Susanne Becken explained the research work she is undertaking, Mr O'Connor said.

"Climate change is a serious issue for the New Zealand tourism industry, and one we must meet head-on to deliver on the 100% Pure promise. We have to reinforce that the overall tourism impact here will be negative environmentally.

"The New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2010 is being updated and sustainability is at the forefront of the agenda. It is anticipated that this will identify goals to assist the industry to move towards a more sustainable future. This research shows the kinds of areas the tourism industry can focus on.

"The Government's aim is for New Zealand to have a truly sustainable economy - across all industry sectors.

"We all have a part to play."
