Council is asking for feedback on two of its bylaws which are in the process of being updated.

The Taupo District Traffic Bylaw 1999 has been reviewed in line with current parking practice and additions have been made to the Taupo District General Bylaw.

The Traffic Bylaw came into force on 7 April 1999. In accordance with the requirements of the Local Government Act 2002, it now needs to be reviewed and updated to reflect changes to parking that have occurred since its adoption.

Area’s of the bylaw that are being amended include parking in Story Place behind the Great Lake Centre and adjacent to the Library, parking on lower Spa Road and Tamamutu Street, inclusion of a taxi stand in Tuwharetoa Street, berm parking and mobility parking.

The Taupo District General Bylaw has five different parts including public places, trading in public places, signage, animal and poultry. Minor amendments and additions are being proposed to these parts as well as the addition of a new part on reserves. Part 6 – Reserves will address public reserve issues such as public safety, disturbance or damage to reserves, fees, access and activities on reserves.

To find out details of the proposed changes to both bylaws go to www.taupo.govt.nz, visit one of the Council offices or public libraries or ring Council on 376 0899.

Gareth Green, Group Manager Environment Services said “Even though the bylaws are driven by legislation, the outcomes can make improvements to people’s lives.”

“We really encourage the community to have their say and make a submission on the proposed amendments,” he said.

Submissions can be made in writing and close at 5pm, Friday 30 May 2008. Submitters will be given the option to present in person to Council.
