Community urged to drive to conditions

This morning’s wintry blast is a timely reminder to residents and visitors to the Queenstown Lakes District that winter driving conditions now apply.

“Now’s the time to dust off your snow chains or go out and purchase a set,” said Queenstown Lakes District Council emergency management officer Brenden Winder.

Businesses, residents and rental car companies should all be gearing up to ensure that snow chains were carried in all vehicles.

“It’s about being prepared for the worst,” Mr Winder said. “With the long cold winter ahead, if you’re not prepared to carry chains, you should be prepared to go without your vehicle.”

Mr Winder added that free weather forecasts were available by visiting www.metservice.com and registering with ‘My Weather’.

”It’s really simple. Just follow the prompts to register and detailed weather forecasts can be emailed directly to you. It’s a great way to stay informed,” he said.

Good winter driving tips to remember were:

* Accelerate smoothly and brake gently.
* 4WD vehicles are no safer than other vehicles, especially downhill.
* Always free your entire windscreen of snow and ice (you can receive an instant fine).
* Check the road conditions before you leave.
* Dress for the conditions.
* Carry chains, know how to fit them and check they fit.
* Shaded areas may be icy all day.
* Ice or a thaw/freeze can occur at any time of the day.
* Bridges require extra care.
* Double your following distance.
* Never overtake a grit truck when it is applying grit.
