The Nelson region is being called on to ‘give it a go’ on World Environment Day in June. Nelson’s celebration will focus on a ‘Less Cars-Less Carbon Day’ with free buses, free parking for carpoolers and a celebratory uptown breakfast starting the day.

World Environment Day on Thursday 5 June is being hosted by New Zealand. The theme of the day is ‘working towards a low carbon economy’, with a focus on reducing carbon emissions.

Transport Co-ordinator Margaret Parfitt says, “The local Councils have got support from the Ministry for the Environment to plan a day with the objective of getting as many people to leave their cars at home as possible.”

“As well as free bus services around Nelson and between Richmond and Nelson, and free parking in the main Nelson car parks for those who car pool. Cyclists won’t miss out, with a breakfast laid on in central Nelson and Richmond. There will be heaps of high visibility giveaways for those who continue to ride through the shorter days of winter.”

Schools will be invited to join in the action too – resource packs are going out with information and suggestions on activities for the days – Walking School Buses will be polishing up their shoes and a competition will be run for the best walking chant on the day.

Karen Lee, Environmental Co-ordinator for Nelson City Council says, “With New Zealand taking the lead on World Environment Day, this is a real opportunity to get our community involved in cutting carbon emissions. We’re looking forward to a great day - and we’re hoping that everyone in Nelson, whether its schools, local businesses or families, will give it a go.”

Less Cars – Less Carbon Day is just one of many activities which will be taking place on the day.
