Mayor Rick Cooper is excited that moves to make Taupo a safer place is a step closer, with the process of forming a Safer Community Trust underway.

The Mayor, who is passionate about safer communities, is calling for likeminded people who have the time, the ability and relevant experience required - to apply for a position as a trustee.

“The Trust needs committed and dedicated local people who want to make things happen.
If you can give your heart and soul to this cause then we want to hear from you,” he says.

A selection panel, including representatives from the police, community and commercial sectors will be responsible for assessing the applications and making 8 appointments by the end of June. A Trust Deed is also being formulated.

“We are leaving it open to anyone in the community to apply. If you think you have what it takes, I encourage you to send us a letter and your CV and tell us why we should pick you,” says Mayor Rick.

Once formed, the Safer Community Trust will be an independent body which will be able to set goals and take action to make Taupo a safer place. The Trust will also be able to apply for funding to appoint a coordinator who can work with the many groups already working towards creating a safer, happier and healthier community.

“We need to continue the momentum gained from the public meeting held earlier this year. I am focused on getting this Trust up and running as soon as we possibly can,” said the Mayor.

Applications and CVs should be sent to the Mayor Rick Cooper at Taupo District Council by 20 June 2008.
