Last year, David Benham, Chief Executive of Greater Wellington Regional Council, commissioned the Gallup Organisation to use its survey tools to undertake a staff engagement survey at the Council. Fostering staff engagement is considered key to the success of an organisation.

“Our staff are our most valuable resource and it is vital that they are engaged with, and committed to, Greater Wellington and its work,” David Benham said. “The Gallup framework has been used successfully around the world and will be a great tool for us to use.”

Participation in the Gallup survey is a long-term commitment for Greater Wellington and the survey will take place annually for at least the next five years.

Gallup’s employee engagement methodology has been well proven internationally over many years. The power of this survey, compared with other staff engagement survey methodologies, is its simplicity, underpinned by robust quantitative data. Gallup’s recognition of the value of teams and how their “success” contributes to overall organisational success is also an important component of their methodology.

Greater Wellington’s results from its 2007 survey are:

Gallup Q12 Grand Mean: 3.69
Satisfaction Mean: 3.70
Leadership Mean: 2.82
Recommend Greater Wellington as a great place to work Mean: 3.68

These results are being discussed amongst Greater Wellington’s workplace teams with a view to developing plans that improve employee engagement in those teams and across the organisation.
