Millennium Institute and North Shore coaches Jan Cameron and Thomas Ansorg have been awarded Swim Coaches of the year.

They received the honour at the awards ceremony at the conclusion of the week-long annual conference of the New Zealand Swim Coaches and Teachers Association (NZSCAT) in Wellington at the weekend.

Swimmers under Cameron and Ansorg won 20 individual national titles at last year’s Absolute Insurance National Championships with 10 of New Zealand’s 18-strong squad at the FINA World Championship coming from their programme. Their leading light is Moss Burmester who was the leading New Zealand swimmer at the world championships with a fourth placing in the 200m butterfly.

North Harbour Swim Teacher Marian Leef was awarded Swim Teacher of the Year. She has been involved at the Mairangi Swim School since 1992 and has won acclaim especially for her teaching programmes with babies and pre-schoolers.

The NZSCAT conference paid tribute to the remarkable contribution of Bert Cotterill who has had an active involvement in swimming for 65 years.

He was a competitive swimmer for 18 years before moving into coaching. Mr Cotterill coached for more than 45 years at the Te Awa, Greendale and later Napier Aquahawks clubs in Hawkes Bay as well as a two-year stint at the internationally renowned Carlile Swim Club in Sydney.

He coached swimmers who competed in three Olympics and also became New Zealand head coach to world championships, the 1976 Montreal Olympics and 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games.

Mr Cotterill was involved in administration becoming manager of several New Zealand swim teams at Commonwealth and Olympic Games level.

He helped produce the Lotto Swim Safe Manual, was chief examiner for the New Zealand Swim Coaches Association and was a Swimming New Zealand (SNZ) Councillor.

He is already a NZSCAT Life Member but was awarded a special Appreciation Service Award at the weekend.

The association presented a life membership to Gisborne’s Gary Martin who has been head coach and run the Enterprise Swim Centre in Gisborne for more than 30 years. He has been involved as head coach of several New Zealand age group teams and manager of the New Zealand team to a number of international events. He has previously sat on the SNZ High Performance panel and has been on the NZSCAT Board for 15 years including 11 years as president.

The burgeoning programmes at Howick Pakuranga, West Auckland Aquatics and Waves (Dunedin) were also honoured.

Simon Mayne (West Auckland Aquatics) was awarded top club coach at the New Zealand Junior championships as well as coach of the year for swimmers with a disability for his work with Daniel Sharp.

Gary Hollywood and Horst Miehe from Howick Pakuranga were top coaches for the New Zealand Age Group championships with Miehe joining Linda Gardner for the award as outstanding swim school operator.
