The Green Party says that regulating cell phone use in cars is a long awaited move that will make New Zealand roads safer and undoubtedly save lives.

Transport Safety Minister Harry Duynhoven said today the Government wanted to amend land transport rules to ban the use of hand-held mobile phones while driving a vehicle.

“The Green Party, and in particular Sue Kedgley, has long advocated for cell phone regulation, and I have no doubt that Sue’s tireless campaigning on the issue has influenced this decision,” Green Party Co-Leader Jeanette Fitzsimons says.

“A recent study showed 85 percent of New Zealanders support making mobile phone use while driving an offence.

“A large majority of the public, the Automobile Association and the two main cell phone providers are all behind a ban on the use of hand held cell phones while driving.

“The Green Party congratulates the Government for finally recognising what has been obvious to the rest of us for some time.”
