Anyone interested in being a part of the Safer Community Trust will need to get their application in by the end of the week says Mayor Rick Cooper.

Applications for Trustees were called for in early May and the 20 June deadline is now looming.

“We need to continue the momentum that was evident at the public meeting held earlier this year. I am committed to getting the Trust up and running as soon as we possibly can,” said the Mayor.

Once formed, the Safer Community Trust will be an independent body which will be able to set goals and take action to make Taupo a safer place. The Trust will also be able to apply for funding to appoint a co-ordinator who can work with the many groups already doing a fantastic job in Taupo.

He says he is pleased with the applications received so far but is calling for more.

“I know there are many people out there that will have thought about being a Trustee – but haven’t put anything in writing yet. Don’t be shy, don’t hold back we need to hear from you now.”

Mayor Rick says a Selection Panel, including representatives from the Police, community and commercial sectors will be charged with considering the applications. He says the Trust want to be able to co-opt other people to fulfil specific roles as required – so is encouraging a wide response rate.

“We need to work together to create safe, happy neighbourhoods. The panel will be looking for dedicated people who have the passion and experience to move the Trust forward,” he said.

CVs and a cover letter should be sent to Mayor Rick Cooper, Taupo District Council, Private Bag 2005, Taupo, by Friday 20 June.
