Hastings District Council will increase its charges at two refuse transfer stations from 1 July.

The changes come after councillors voted to adopt a user-pays approach to the refuse transfer station fees.

Previously the cost of operating the two stations was being subsidised by ratepayers.

Ross Franklin, Corporate Services Manager, said although the charges were increasing this would make a big difference to the amount ratepayers were contributing to running the facilities each year.

“Ratepayers have been contributing about $560,000 every year to the operation of these facilities, now the costs will be covered by the users. Through the increased charges the Council is also providing a clear incentive for residents to recycle and separate green waste” said Mr Franklin.

The cost of a car visiting the refuse transfer stations has increased from $7 to $12. Small trailer loads (including utes and vans) will cost $21, and large trailers will cost $32.

Charges for green waste have not changed and cost only $5 per car-load, $8 for a small trailer and $12 for a large trailer.

Commercial disposal of waste will cost $85 per tonne or $50 per tonne for green waste.
