Housing NZ has allocated $20,000 of funding to investigate youth emergency accommodation in the Taupo Urban Area.

The $20,000 will be used for a feasibility research study looking into the provision of emergency and crisis accommodation for young people in the Taupo Urban Area.

A recent youth services survey conducted by Council’s Community Support Team identified that within Taupo, there are a number of agencies delivering youth-specific services however there is a lack of youth-specific emergency accommodation facilities available for Taupo youth.

Group Manager Community and Recreation, Peter Martyn said “previous research indicates that this is an area that needs to be reviewed for our youth and this feasibility study will allow us to identify what action needs to be taken.”

The three stage study will link in with various national and local strategies to do with housing needs of children and youth people. It will include a review of what is currently happening at a national level and consideration of best practice, a situation analysis, an of estimation costs, evaluation of sustainability issues and the identification of potential partners and collaborations.
