An extension to Wakeman Road that provides alternative vehicle access to the western end of Acacia Bay has been completed.

The 1.1 kilometre extension runs from the end of Wakeman Road in Acacia Bay across private land linking with the western end of Acacia Bay Road beside Lake Taupo. Traffic was diverted on to the new road in mid-June to allow contractors to complete work that needed to be done at the western end of Acacia Bay Road.

Group Manager, Infrastructure Services Ted Anderson says the contractors have now completed work on the project and the new access route is now fully operational.

Chairman of the Taupo/Tongariro-Mangakino/Pouakani committee Kathryn Uvhagen says the Wakeman Road extension will take the pressure off Acacia Bay Road by catering for heavy traffic and projected growth in the area.

She said the roading project was completed on time and within budget which is a reflection of the co-operative approach taken by Hiruharama Ponui Incorporation, the contractors (Greg Lamb Limited), the engineers (Opus International Consultants Ltd), Council and residents.

“I would like to congratulate everyone involved in the project for a job well done and would also like to thank the public for their tolerance while the road was being built.”
