The Taupo/Kaingaroa-Mangakino/Pouakani Committee (Northern Rating Area) has given approval for the land next to the AC Baths, to be used as the location for a new Youthtown facility to cater for 12 to 18 year olds.

The facility will be located to the east of the AC Baths complex where the manager’s house, which is marked for relocation, is currently situated. Youthtown will install a new removable building on this site, which will provide a safe and accessible facility for young people to gather and be involved in activities.

TKMP Chairman Kathryn Uvhagen received assurance that the Youthtown building would remain within the footprint of the current house site, and care would be taken to ensure that the structure would not impact on the existing disability carparking area. Mayor Rick suggested that the installation of bike racks be considered as the facility would mainly be used by children and youth.

Youthtown will pay all costs associated with providing and maintaining the facility and will also employ staff to implement the programmes and activities.

The TKMP recommendations and resolutions include the use of the manager’s house site and garage by Youthtown, and a lease applied for three years, with two further three year rights of renewal.

Cr Barry Hickling stated that “Youthtown has been working with youth for 75 years and has the experience and expertise to ensure ‘Youthtown Taupo’ succeeds.”
