Slips partially block roads, Kawakawa Bay, Orere Gorge
A major slip has partially blocked the main road into Kawakawa Bay, Manukau city, and another seventeen slips came down overnight on the road between Kawakawa Bay and Orere Point.
Works Infrastructure is clearing the roads, which will be monitored for further slips over the weekend, Manukau City Council manager, emergency planning, Wade Harrison says.
“Motorists should take extreme care on both the main road into Kawakawa Bay and on the road through the gorge to Orere Point. There is a risk of more slips, particularly on the Orere Gorge road, with the weather forecast to deteriorate again overnight and on the weekend,” Mr Harrison says.
“We are keeping a close watch to ensure that the roads can be kept open, but motorists need to watch out for warning signs, slow down and be alert for any fresh slips, rocks or fallen trees.”
Kawakawa Bay has a population of around 300.
