There was a net permanent and long-term (PLT) migration gain of 700 people in July 2008, up from 200 inJuly 2007, Statistics New Zealand said today.

PLT arrivals were up by over 800, partly offset by almost 400more PLT departures.

Net PLT migration has now increased in three of the last five months compared withthe same months in 2007.

In July 2008, net PLT migration increased from India, China and the United Kingdom (each up 300).

Thenet PLT outflow to Australia was 2,700 in July 2008, up from 2,200 in July 2007.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, PLT arrivals exceeded departures by 800 for the month of July 2008.

Thisseries averaged 500 per month between January 2007 and June 2008.

In the year ended July 2008, there was a net gain of 5,200 PLT migrants, down from 9,000 in the July 2007year but above the recent low of 4,600 in the February 2008 year.

There was a net outflow of 32,300migrants to Australia, the highest since the outflow of 32,600 recorded in the April 1989 year.

Short-term visitor arrivals numbered 175,700 in July 2008, up 2 percent from the 173,000 recorded in July2007.

There were more visitor arrivals from Australia (up 1,200 or 2 percent) and France (up 700 or 55percent), but fewer from China (down 900 or 12 percent), Korea (down 700 or 8 percent) and Taiwan (down700 or 25 percent).

The 2.482 million visitor arrivals recorded in the July 2008 year were up 18,600 (1percent) from the previous July year.

New Zealand residents departed on 202,200 short-term trips overseas in July 2008, up 16,700 (9 percent)from July 2007. This was largely due to the school holidays starting in July this year compared with June in2007.

There were more departures to Australia, Fiji, the United States, China and the United Kingdom.

Forthe July 2008 year, New Zealand resident departures numbered 1.994 million, up 71,200 (4 percent) fromthe previous year.
