Hampden Walkway Closed
A walkway at Hampden, located at the beach end of Stafford Street, was closed to the public by Council yesterday, due to slipping caused by coastal erosion.
The informal walkway, used mainly by locals to access the beach, is located near the closed Hampden Landfill. The former landfill site is located on land owned by the Department of Conservation, and is managed by Council with consent from the Otago Regional Council.
Council is currently in the process of addressing slipping problems at the closed landfill area, caused by erosion from recent high seas.
Signage has been put in place to alert the public to the walkway’s closure. At this stage, Council can not confirm the future of the walkway, but will notify the public of any developments.
