Manukau City Council is warning that the public must stay away from the foreshore and cordoned-off area at Clovelly Road, where part of the cliff face is crumbling between the properties at 114 and 118 Clovelly Road.

More significant movement has taken place overnight and the council emphasises that it is not a case of if, but when, the cliff face will slide.

Director Economic Rick Walden says that it is imperative that people understand that a massive amount of material will come down.

“The ground cracks have widened significantly, and we are advised that the rock will give way at some stage. We have also been advised by our geotechnical specialists that this is caused by rock failure, rather than a slip.

“We don’t know when it will fall, and that makes it even more imperative that people stay away from the area, including the beach.

“Our primary concern is that the residents are safe and that has been achieved.”

The council will continue monitoring it, but it is in nature’s hands, Mr Walden says.
