Changes to the Taupo District Traffic Bylaw have recently been adopted by Council meaning some changes to parking areas around the Taupo CBD.

The Traffic Bylaw came into force on 7 April 1999 and changes have been made in line with current parking practise and after two months of public consultation (including public submissions).

The bylaw will mean:

· changes to parking restrictions in Story Place behind the Great Lake Centre, near the Taupo Museum and adjacent to the Taupo Public Library, on lower Spa Road and Tamamutu Street and outside Waiora House on Kaimanawa Street

· the inclusion of a taxi stand in Tuwharetoa Street

· no parking on berms in the District although exemptions may be applied for from Council.

As a result of submissions received, parking in Story Place will remain all day parking.

Chairman of the Regulatory and Hearings Committee, Don Ormsby said that he was confident that the changes would meet the changing parking demands in the District, whilst taking into account public submissions received. “The public questioned confining all day parking behind the Great Lake Centre, so we have allowed some all day parking without unduly restricting the use of community facilities in the area.”

For more information on these changes, pick up a Taupo District Council parking brochure from a Taupo District Council office or check out the website www.taupo.govt.nz

Changes to the Taupo District General Bylaw have also been adopted by Council recently, incorporating changes including trading in public places, signage, animal and poultry. A new section (part 6) will address public reserve issues such as public safety, disturbance or damage to reserves, fees, access and activities on reserves.
