Federated Farmers encourages communities and businesses to make the most of a fund that will improve broadband connections in rural areas.

The government initiated $340 million Broadband Investment Fund is now open for applications.

Spokesman for telecommunications, Donald Aubrey says the Federation has always been a strong supporter of improved communications and information technology infrastructure for the rural community.

“Increased demand together with more complex files warrants increased investment for the benefit of rural businesses, including farming. It is therefore good to see this commitment to improvements in telecommunications infrastructure for rural areas,” Mr Aubrey said.

The BIF contains $325 million operating and $15 million capital funding available over a maximum of five years and is a key part of the government’s Digital Strategy 2.0 package. $75 million of the fund has been set aside to extend the reach of broadband into remote rural areas that do not currently have broadband capability.

Applications for the fund close on 30 September.
