Acting Manukau Mayor lauds local business success
Acting Manukau Mayor Gary Troup says the outstanding examples of business success revealed at the 2008 Westpac Manukau Business Excellence Awards highlight the strength of the local economy.
“I congratulate Metalman for being named Manukau Business of the Year. They have a unique approach to exporting metal for recycling and the fact that the business has doubled in two years shows why they have been recognised for their success.
“I’d also like to acknowledge the huge contribution Sally Synnott and Kit Wong, who were named as the newest members of the Manukau Business Hall of Fame. Each is a perfect example of what a business leader with vision and passion can achieve.
“All the finalists and awards winners operate at high standards and reflect the strength of Manukau business. Behind each of these winning names is a wonderful story of innovation, entrepreneurship and commitment,” Mr Troup says.
“Indeed, the strength of Manukau’s economy is reflected the stories of excellence we hear year after year at the awards and this year is no exception.
“I am thrilled to see such a range of outstanding Manukau firms represented not only as winners and finalists but also among the nominees.
“Judges will have had a hard time selecting the very best when the standard has been so high. That bodes well for our future economic prospects.
“Of course, Manukau is a great place in which to do business for many reasons – our superb location, excellent infrastructure, our diverse working population and a business-friendly council.”
Even though the current economic climate is challenging, there are indications better times are ahead, Mr Troup says.
The latest NZIER Quarterly Survey of Business Opinion for the June 2008 quarter states Manukau’s economy is performing significantly better in terms of output, profitability and employment than the country as a whole.
Among Manukau firms general business confidence is improving and employment intentions are strengthening, the survey states.
“It’s vital our economy moves ahead strongly so that we can provide employment for the thousands of job seekers who enter the job market in Manukau each year,” Mr Troup says.
