Reserves Contributions Help Develop Kaiwaka Sports Complex
Kaipara District Council has recognised the value of the Kaiwaka Sports Association by contributing $37,270 from reserves contribution funds to complete sealing of the carpark at the vital community facility.
Kaiwaka Sports Association, run almost entirely by volunteers, was established in 1977 and has grown to encompass 12 affiliated clubs including rugby, netball, hockey, athletics, basketball, fitness centre, squash, touch, tennis, badminton, soccer and gymnastics with a total membership of more than 1,000. Its facility also serves as a base for the Kaiwaka school and community organisations.
The Association asked Council for $37,250 plus GST towards sealing the main entrance carpark area to complete work begun several years ago on the main entranceway. The Association will provide the balance of the $42,270 cost.
Council’s Community Spaces Manager, Stephen Soole, says “the Council’s contribution comes from contributions paid by developers in the Kaiwaka/Onerriri area which are set aside for capital improvements to reserves in the area. As such it will have no impact on rates.”
“This complex is a true representation of a multi-use sports complex and a credit to the Kaiwaka community and its ‘can do’ attitude,” Mr Soole said.
“They have achieved all this by their own efforts and have never asked Council for money.”
“Council was very aware of this and believes that helping the Association will be an excellent way for the community to benefit from the reserves contributions collected in their area.”
Kaiwaka Sports Association Manager, Cheryl Anderson, says “the grant will allow the sealing of the remainder of the carpark, the road to the tennis courts and main access down to Gibbons Road.”
"Everyone is really pleased and appreciates the Council's support because this is a very well used complex. It will make a big difference."
