MANUKAU CITY

With the recent triumphs of Scott Dixon, Valerie Vili and the De La Salle College 1st XV, has this been the best period ever for Counties Manukau sporting achievement?

Acting Manukau Mayor Gary Troup says that’s arguably the case.

“I congratulate Manurewa’s own Scott Dixon on taking out the IndyCar Series in the United States once again and also the De La Salle 1st XV on sharing the national secondary school rugby title,” Mr Troup says.

“We are still basking in the golden glow of Valerie Vili’s Olympic glory.”

“I’m wondering if there has ever been a better period of achievement for Counties Manukau sports people.

“It would certainly make for an interesting debate in our local clubs, workplace lunchrooms and homes.”

“Of course, Counties Manukau has had some spectacular sporting triumphs in the past.

“Who can forget John Walker’s Olympic 1500 metre gold and the multiple medals won by boardsailer Barbara Kendall.

“David Tua won an Olympic boxing medal and went on to challenge for the heavyweight title.

“On the rugby field, 1979 was a special year when Counties won the national championship and beat the touring Argentina team.”

“And then there’s the outstanding record of the mighty Takanini-trained Sunline including two Cox Plates.”

“The debate could go on and on – the list of achievement is impressive.”

“But this year has been especially great – I’m sure the judges at the Halberg awards will have a hard time sorting out which Counties Manukau sportsperson should take out the supreme award – Valerie or Scott.”

“We are all very proud of their accomplishments. In fact, Manukau could just about lay claim to the label of City of Champions, or even Titletown.”

Mr Troup says the John Walker Find Your Field of Dreams project launched in May aims to help more Manukau youngsters realise their potential through sports and physical activity.
