Acting Manukau Mayor Gary Troup says the killing of a police officer and wounding of another in Mangere East this morning is a despicable act which is condemned by the residents of this city.

“This is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts, condolences and sympathies go out to the families who must be completely devastated,” Mr Troup says.

“The officer who was killed in the line of duty has made the ultimate sacrifice. Our city supports the police and I will do everything in my power to enhance and strengthen that support.

“The council has been working for years trying to build and strengthen communities which have deep-seated and difficult challenges.

“But our job is next to impossible when we are confronted with the face of evil – the scourge of P, methamphetamine and drugs generally.

“This latest incident has happened on nine/eleven. The terrorists in our midst are those who make, distribute and consume P and similar drugs.

“New Zealand has to have a war on terror targeting this terrible industry. Let’s not underestimate the degree of evil we confront.

“These terrorists are destroying our neighbourhoods, our children, our communities, our city and our nation.

Mr Troup says all political parties should commit themselves to holding a national anti-P, anti-drug, anti-violent crime summit immediately after the election.

“All options for dealing to this terrible plague must be up for discussion. Many people throughout the nation are calling for options like arming the police, military patrols of our streets, longer prison sentences, faster processing through the courts, increased police resources.

“The pros and cons of all these and other options must be thoroughly debated.

“But essentially the buck should stop with those who have the power to make a difference – central government.

“Let those with the power to effect change do so. They will have our full support.”

The council flag at the Civic Centre in Wiri Station Rd is being flown at half-mast as a mark of respect for the slain police officer.
