Cost escalations on plans for a pedestrian footbridge over the Kerikeri River in the Stone Store Basin have resulted in a review of the options available.

The proposed design for a 56-metre single span pedestrian bridge 70 metres upstream from the site of the former road bridge attracted a construction price which exceeded engineering estimates and available funds.

"Consequently the two funding agencies (NZ Transport Agency and the Ministry of Culture and Heritage) have decided the design of the bridge should be reviewed to lower the construction price to within the available budget," Roads & Stormwater General Manager Richard Green said today.

"This review is now underway. Two options are being considered:-

To determine whether or not costs can be reduced sufficiently by modifying the concrete arch design while still maintaining the desired minimal visual impact in this sensitive location.

To consider whether or not an alternate design such as a single span suspension bridge or a two span laminated timber structure, will meet both the cost and visual impact criteria.

"It is planned to redesign the bridge in accordance with the outcome of the review and to call tenders for its construction as soon as the redesign has been finished.

"Unfortunately this means that construction is not expected to start until February or March next year," he said.

In the meantime work to complete the removal of the old bridge abutments and associated landscaping, construction of a turning area for vehicles and associated landscaping on the north side of the river, and construction of the ford will continue as weather conditions allow.
