The new look of Heretaunga Street East is now clearly visible, with the completion of the latest Hastings CBD revitalisation project fast approaching.

By Sunday, October 5, the 200 and 300 blocks of Heretaunga Street East will be completed.

The new urban design features two new roundabouts, new paving, feature kerbs, rubbish bins, streetlights, angle car-parking and mid-block crossing thresholds, giving easy pedestrian access while calming traffic.

Another new addition is the installation of a CCTV camera on the Warren Street intersection, adding to the current surveillance of downtown Hastings.

Aside from updating the area, the development aims to slow traffic for shopper safety and convenience.

While the 300 block is already open to traffic, the 200 block will be closed, between September 22 – 28, while the block is given a new coat of asphalt in preparation for the reintroduction of traffic.

The final finishing touches will occur over the next ten days with new bins and “snake” lights being installed.

Feedback has been positive and Council is appreciative of the patience shown by local retailers and motorists during the construction period.

The upgrade of the Opera House Precinct, and now the 200 and 300 blocks, caps off the revamp of the east end of Hastings. With spring arriving and Christmas just around the corner, the revitalised east end can look forward to good trading.
