Police Remembrance Day
Police around New Zealand are today reflecting on those who have lost their lives in protection of society as they mark Police Remembrance Day.
Many Police staff will be wearing the huia feather-shaped Police Remembrance Pin. The Pin, introduced last year by the Police Association in partnership with Police, provides a way for police to show their remembrance.
“Wearing the Police Remembrance Pin is a sign of respect for those who have lost their lives in service to society,” Police Association President Greg O’Connor said.
“This year’s ceremony will be particularly poignant as we remember two officers killed this year in the line of duty, Sergeant Derek Wootton, and Sergeant Don Wilkinson.
““Both men went to work, like thousands of their colleagues around the country every day, knowing the risks they faced. They did not come home.
“Today we honour them, and those many other police before them who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their communities,” Mr O’Connor said.
“Observance of Police Remembrance Day has grown in recent years. This parallels resurgence in the recognition of Anzac Day, as New Zealanders remember and acknowledge the sacrifices others have made for their safety and freedom.
“Faced with growing violence, police officers today perhaps also have greater cause to reflect on the risks they face as they do their duty, than they might once have had,” Mr O’Connor said.
