Locals with a passion for animals are being given the chance to gain some hands-on experience in zoo operations.

Brooklands Zoo is starting a volunteer programme, with people 16 years and older able to take on a wide range of activities within the zoo depending on their experience and knowledge.

The key requirement is that the volunteers are highly motivated about animal care and husbandry.

“We have a great team of staff at the zoo, and we see the volunteer programme as a way for locals to support the keepers and have a role in this very popular facility,” says Curator Pukekura Park Chris Connolly.

“Ideally the volunteers would be able to commit to a regular time slot. They wouldn’t have direct contact with the animals unless instructed by a keeper, but they will receive full training for the roles they take on.”

Anyone who is interested in volunteering can contact Acting Coordinator Sarah Holman at the council, on 06-759 6060, for more information about what is required.
