The Taupo Safer Community Trust had their first meeting on Wednesday to get to know each other and talk about the way forward.

All seven trustees have been appointed with representatives from the Principals’ Association, Towncentre Taupo and the Taupo Police now on board. Peter Moyle, Barbara Arthurs and Sergeant James McGrogan will join Taupo District Council’s nominated trustee Gareth Green, and independent trustees Mahau Kingi, Maria Simeona and Ted Swanney.

Mahau Kingi said it was great to get the new group together and put names to faces. “A lot of good ideas were shared and we are sure we will be able to contribute to making Taupo a safer place for our community and visitors.”

The Trust will work within Taupo town and its surrounds with a specific focus on safety promotion and crime prevention. Steps will be taken to prevent crime – a hot topic among Taupo residents since the murder of Karen Aim in January. The Trust will work closely with community organisations. “It is important for us all to work together efficiently,” says Mr Kingi.
