Auckland rail commuters will be treated to a vision of the future on Monday morning (October 13) when Green Party MP Keith Locke and his supporters transform the Mt Eden railway station into a more pleasant place for commuters.

The normally rather desolate station platform will get a Green makeover as it is decorated with plants, furniture and refreshments.

“We want to show rail travellers a vision of what can be achieved in the future,” Mr Locke, a Mt Eden resident, says.

“The Mt Eden station has been revamped, but it's still pretty stark. Come Monday it’s going to get a temporary do-up, to add some of the nice backdrops and station services that overseas rail commuters have come to expect.”

Mr Locke says Monday’s makeover session is a lead-in event to the Green Party’s Auckland Transport Plan launch at the Britomart station next Wednesday afternoon (October 15).

“Reliable and efficient rail services are a vital link in Auckland’s transport mix. Commuters deserve more facilities at stations, and the Greens will working to get the money for this. Rising fuel prices and traffic jams are tempting many Aucklanders to leave their cars at home and try different ways to getting to work. It’s important they enjoy all parts of their journey.”

Media are invited to attend Monday’s event.
