HASTINGS

The dash across narrow bridges in 100km/h traffic is a common concern among Hawke’s Bay cyclists, but on Go By Bike Day (February 28) cyclists will be top priority.

Transit staff will be stationed at each bridge leading into Hastings with appropriate signage to warn traffic about cyclists ahead. Cyclists will have legal right-of-way on the bridges. Go By Bike Day aims to encourage more people to leave their cars at home and cycle to work, benefiting from the exercise and reduced fuel bills.

Meeting points have been arranged around Napier, Hastings and Havelock North, where groups of cyclists can meet before making their way into the central city.

Hastings District Councillor Deborah Turner, who is spearheading the campaign to get more people on two wheels, said Go By Bike Day had been a big success last year.

“I hope more people who saw how the event worked last year will give it a go this time. There are numerous benefits to cycling, not just the lower petrol bills but also the amazing kick-start it gives your day. By the time you get to work you’re all warmed up and ready to go.”

Participants are encouraged to register their interest with Sport Hawke’s Bay ahead of the day, which will entitle them to a free breakfast snack pack on arrival in the city.
