Hastings District Council has declared a result for the Mohaka Ward Byelection after voting closed at midday today.

Electoral Officer, Peter Woodroffe, says Tania Kerr won with a total of 1,098 votes.

Timothy Tinker, the other candidate, received 322 votes.

Almost 40 percent of the 3561 registered voters in the ward voted.

A byelection was called in July after the sitting councillor, Deborah Turner, passed away.

Tania Kerr will be sworn in as a councillor at the council meeting to be held at 1pm on Thursday, October 16.

Mrs Kerr was the chairperson of the Hastings District Rural Community Board.

Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule says Mrs Kerr has done a great job as the chair of the Rural Community Board and welcomes her aboard as a councillor.
