Funding Available for Groups Helping At-risk Youth

Wellington City Council is encouraging community organisations that provide care, education or contribute to a better quality of life for socially disadvantaged young people to apply for funding from the Joe Aspell Trust.

Joe Aspell was a former Wellington City Councillor who left his estate to a charitable trust to help care for at-risk young people living in Wellington. The trust provides grants to not-for-profit groups improving the quality of life of young people and providing opportunities for their advancement.

Last year the trust gave over $23,000 across seven organisations. One organisation to benefit was Youthline Wellington.

Youthline provides free, confidential, non-judgemental phone, text and email counselling to young people in the Wellington region. They were granted $2500 to go towards the costs of training volunteer counsellors.

The Joe Aspell Trust's Chair, Mayor Kerry Prendergast, says the trust provides invaluable support for groups who work with some of Wellington's most vulnerable young people.

"This is a wonderful trust that supports groups who are working to make life better for young people going through tough times. Joe will be fondly remembered by many Wellingtonians for this generous legacy."

Applications for the Joe Aspell Trust close at 5.00pm on Friday 31 October.
