Reid’s Farm, a council-owned recreation reserve alongside the Waikato River and one of the District’s most popular free camping spots, will reopen for free camping on 1 November.

The reserve is located on the banks of the Waikato River, upstream from Huka Falls, and is a picturesque setting ideal for camping, picnics and recreational kayaking.

In recent summers, the campsite has experienced a number of health and safety issues which resulted in complaints from both locals and visitors. The issues included rubbish control problems, broken glass, vegetation damage, uncontrolled fires and intimidating behaviour towards members of the public.

Revised conditions have been set for the reserve for this summer in an attempt to prevent the same problems occurring.

The camping season has been shortened and is now permitted from 1 November to 5 April. The maximum length of stay is 7 days within any two-week period. There will be daily rubbish collection and toilet cleaning during the camping period. As with previous years, fires and cutting of vegetation are not permitted.

Upon arrival, all campers will receive a pamphlet outlining the camping regulations.

Daily visits from Taupo District Council officers or a security firm will be made to monitor length of stay and to enforce regulations. During the peak of the camping season, from 8 December to 8 February, an onsite caretaker will stay in the reserve to provide further supervision.

It is hoped the new regulations will ensure the natural environment and camping facilities of Reid’s Farm are protected and enhanced so locals and visitors can continue to enjoy the reserve for years to come. The revised conditions will be trialled this summer and results will be taken into account when Council considers long-term management options for Reid’s Farm Reserve in 2009.

Councillor Kathryn Uvhagen describes Reid’s Farm as a picturesque recreational area. “The revised rules represent the wishes of the community and will hopefully ensure the safety and enjoyment of everyone who utilises the reserve. Improved care of the reserve by all involved is essential to enhance the beauty of this fabulous spot,” she says.
