Dust suppression programmed
The Queenstown Lakes District Council’s dust suppression programme gets underway next month, QLDC roading manager Ian Marshall said.
“The council controls more than 800 kilometres of formed roads, just under half of that area is in unsealed roads, despite having made some real progress on seal extension,” Mr Marshall said.
In the height of summer dusty roads carried a nuisance factor for some residents and a safety issue for the general public.
Road oiling was the only cost efficient solution to dust suppression. The five week programme was scheduled to commence in Wanaka on November 3 (2-3 weeks) before heading to the Wakatipu Basin (2 weeks).
“If you would like to check if your road is to be oiled, or you would like further information please contact the council,” Mr Marshall said.
Consideration would be given to requests to remove a road from the oiling schedule or add it.
‘Our roading contractor Downer EDI Works is also offering a service for oiling roads that do not meet the criteria for public oiling,” Mr Marshall said.
If people wanted to find out more about the cost of private oiling then they should call Downer EDI Works 441 4268 or email michelle.braden@downerediworks.co.nz
The closing date for all requests was Friday 31 October 2008.
