Planning for a new look and feel for Taupo town centre is underway and Council staff will be out on the streets to capture ideas from locals who are being encouraged to bring their ideas to life in the ‘Design our Town’ competition

Mayor Rick Cooper says, “This is a great opportunity for everyone to have input on what they think Taupo town centre needs to make it a vibrant, contemporary area.”

He said, “we want people to think big and give us their vision for how our town should be put together, whether it simply be improving what we already have – or remodelling our current town centre into something completely fresh and new.”

“We also want your ideas on the small touches that will really make Taupo unique and interesting - like the trout on our stormwater grates our streetlights or street art - the sky is the limit! says Mayor Cooper. “Ideas about how existing and future commercial and industrial areas outside the town centre should look are also being sought by the Council,” he said.

There are some fantastic prizes up for grabs including meal vouchers from Plateau and Replete Cafe, a cruise on the lake with brunch thanks to Chris Jolly Outdoors, a family jet boat ride care of Hukafalls Jet, two Taupo Bungy jumps and the use of a vehicle from Wings and Wheels Hyundai for a week!”

Entries to the competition will need to be sent to the Council offices (Private Bag 2005, Taupo 3352) by 28th of November 2008. You can find out more by visiting the Council website or contact Hilary Samuel hsamuel@taupo.govt.nz , Ph 07 376 0634. The competition will be judged by an Urban Designer, the CEO and the Mayor.
