Shopping with Sue and Aust Senator Bob Brown in Auckland
Green Party MP Sue Kedgley will take visting Australian Green Party leader Senator Bob Brown on a supermarket tour of the College Hill New World supermarket in Auckland at 2.20pm today.
The Australian and New Zealand Green Parties will announce today they will work together to improve food labelling laws in New Zealand and Australia over the next three years, by seeking to introduce parallel legislation in both countries, and other initiatives.
Ms Kedgley regularly takes Kiwi shoppers on supermarket tours where she highlights issues such as:
how to become a more conscious, ethical consumer
how to read and understand nutrition labelling
how to avoid purchasing foods that may contain GE ingredients
how to identify cruelty free products
how to purchase locally grown New Zealand products
additives to avoid
Ms Kedgley says consumers are increasingly interested in the origin of food and want to know where it comes from as well as what’s in it.
“I know from taking supermarket tours around New Zealand that most consumers can’t understand our complex nutrition labelling and want a much simpler ‘see at a glance’ label, such as traffic light labelling which can help consumers quickly identify which foods are healthy and which are unhealthy.
