Bold New Signs a Welcome Addition at Taharoa Domain
Visitors to the Taharoa Domain are now welcomed by bold colourful new signage which reflects the Domain’s special character and the partnership between local Iwi and Kaipara District Council in managing it.
Now, instead of the previous mish-mash of uncoordinated signage, they are met by bright blue and green plinth-type signs, up to three metres tall, at strategic points around the domain and its lakes.
The new eye-catching designs feature easily read symbols and messages, including directions, maps, rules for boaties and also advise what you can and can not do in the Domain. Others indicate gate closure times, areas for camping, parking or walkways.
The fragility of the Kai Iwi Lakes and surrounding area is also highlighted by messages urging visitors to be environmentally responsible while the reverse sides thank them, when leaving, for looking after the domain.
Taharoa Domain is managed jointly by the Taharoa Domain Governance Committee, comprising representatives from Kaipara District Council plus Te Kuihi and Te Roroa Iwi, and the new signage reflects this partnership.
It features a swirl design in blue and green on signs going into the Domain, while on the way out the two colours are merged to symbolise a coming together. The three partners are also prominently listed.
The signs go hand-in-hand with a new comprehensive brochure on the Taharoa Domain which is the first complete update of information in 20 years. This features the iconic domain’s history, sensitive environment, cultural significance and the wide range of attractions and activities available. Both projects have been overseen by No. 9 Communications Limited.
Taharoa Domain Governance Committee Chairman, Brian Burnett, says the committee is delighted to at last have a coordinated design for the lakes signage.
“It is the result of a great deal of consultation with campers, day trippers, iwi and management, and eliminates any past confusion as to the requirements of the committee and the welcome that we extend to this unique recreational location.”
The new signage is part of an ongoing programme to improve the domain in line with expectations identified during extensive consultation. This has already seen wastewater systems upgraded and camping numbers
