Dumped roadside rubbish is not only a bad look for the district but is liable to be searched and the perpetrator contacted, council staff are warning.

Incidents of rubbish littering road reserves occur throughout the district generally along roadsides – Top Grass and Umutaoroa Roads have been noticed lately – but also at other popular spots like the Dannevirke Domain triangle.

Staff are on the look out as they travel around the district and rubbish picked up will be sorted.

Illegal dumping on council reserve is an offence liable for a $100 instant fine or $500 if the offender is traced and prosecuted. They will be required to clean up the site or be charged council contractor’s fees to do so.

Laziness and a reluctance to pay transfer station fees are blamed for these illegal acts of personal irresponsibility.

“It’s easier to just biff it down a bank,” comments animal control officer Cameron Tait.

Some of the material dumped could be recycled waste manager Jeremy Hirst’s points out. “And that doesn’t cost anything.”
