The feasibility of a pedestrian and cycle bridge across the Waikato River is being investigated by Taupo District Council. The bridge is one of the proposals the Council will be seeking public comment in the district’s draft ten-year plan ‘Towards 2019’.

It is anticipated that the bridge would connect Nukuhau Reserve and Riverside Park to allow foot and cycle traffic to traverse the Waikato River without using nearby Norman Smith Street which is often busy with vehicular traffic.

The proposed design is a “cable-stayed” bridge which would allow for 10m clearance for boats beneath the bridge while still maintaining easy access for people with disabilities. If the bridge goes ahead, it is hoped that it would be opened in time to coincide with the completion of the East Taupo Arterial in 2012.

The preliminary project cost for the bridge is estimated to be $1.35 million. Approximately half of this amount has been allowed for in the District’s ten-year plan. The remaining cost could possibly be funded by the New Zealand Transport Agencies Land Transport Programme.

Public feedback on the project will be sought during the upcoming consultation period of the draft ten-year plan. Full or summarised copies of the draft plan will be available from Taupo District Council offices or from www.taupo.govt.nz by 19 December. User groups will also be consulted prior to a resource consent application.
