State Auckland Aces all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme has been ranked as the top-performing player early in the State Championship, under the new Most Valuable Player (MVP) system.
The first MVP Bulletin was launched today by the New Zealand Cricket Players Association (NZCPA) and New Zealand Cricket (NZC).

The system, originally developed by the Professional Cricketers’ Association in England, allows all aspects of a player’s game to be assessed together, providing a ranking in relation to other players.

Heath Mills, Executive Manager for the NZCPA, said the MVP system will add an extra dimension to the game for both fans and players.

“It’s a new set of statistics for fans to enjoy and discuss, but for players the system will provide a useful, wide-ranging picture of their overall performance throughout the season,” he said.

The MVP works on a cumulative points system that rewards players for every run scored, every wicket taken and every catch held throughout the season. A player also achieves bonus points based on other criteria important to the outcome of the match.

Notes:

As this is the first MVP Bulletin, the MVP Top Five at a Glance and State Championship Top Five rankings are the same.

Rankings are based on total points; note that some players have played more games than others.

MVP Bulletins will be issued weekly through the season on the following dates:

Tue 2 December; Tue 9 Dec; Wed 17 Dec; Tue 23 Dec; Wed 31 Dec

Tue 6 January 2009; Tue 13 Jan; Tue 20 Jan; Tue 27 Jan
