Partial Opening of Huatoki Development for Christmas
Part of the new public area next to the Huatoki Stream in central New Plymouth will be open to the public over Christmas and the New Year.
When the contractors close down for the festive season on 19 December, both Huatoki and James lanes, the new footbridge and the men’s and women’s toilets will be open for public use, but the rest of the area will be closed off for public safety.
Work will resume on-site on 12 January.
“We were aiming to have the entire project completed by Christmas but we just lost too much time to bad weather over the months,” says Manager Projects Team Jeff Bondy.
“We will have some of the site accessible to the public over Christmas, but the rest will be closed off until everything is completed – which at this point is looking to be late January, weather permitting.”
The installation of trees and other landscaping will take place in autumn, while a weir in Huatoki Stream will be constructed at a later date.
When completed, the Huatoki space will link Devon St to Ariki St and Puke Ariki Landing, and will feature an overhead canopy as well as a streamside amphitheatre.
